KABUL: President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani met with Afghan Hindus and Sikhs returning from India on Tuesday and listened to their demands and suggestions, saying that they were an integral part of the Afghan society, a presidential palace statement said yesterday.
During the meeting, the Administrative Office of the President first provided information on food and clothing assistance to 40 returning Afghan Hindu and Sikh families and coordination with relevant departments and ministries to solve their problems, according to the statement.
The President’s Senior Adviser on Hindus and Sikhs, Anarkali Hunaryar, a member of the Meshrano Jirga, and a number of representatives of the National Council of Hindus and Sikhs of Afghanistan thanked the President for his assistance to the returning families and they reiterated their continued support for the Republic, the peace process and the security and defense forces.
They shared their problems with the president in the fields of education, entrance exams, security, shelters, land usurpation and sale of personal and public property of Afghan Hindus and suggested setting up a research center for Afghan Hindus and Sikhs as well as naming a day after their culture.
Welcoming the returning Hindus and Sikhs of Afghanistan, President Ghani said that you have a high place in the glorious history of the country, hoping that they could once again bring empathy, prosperity and trade to the country. “You are an integral part of Afghan society,” the president told the returning Hindu and Sikh families. The president instructed the Minister of Justice to jointly work with Ministry of Hajj and Religious Affairs and identify all Hindu and Sikh public areas so that to prevent their usurpation. The President instructed the Ministry of Education to solve the problem of Hindu and Sikh schools in Nangarhar and Kabul provinces within two weeks and reopen them as soon as possible.
The President also instructed that a section called the Afghan Hindu and Sikh Research Center be established at the Kushan Research Center of the Academy of Sciences and that one day be included in the national calendar as the Afghan Hindu and Sikh Cultural Day.
