World Environment Day marked in Kabul

KABUL: World Environment Day was marked in a ceremony held yesterday in Kabul. In the ceremony, head of National Environment Protection Agency (NEPA) Hafiz Rahman said that environment was one of the key debates in the world as environmental changes and harms had no borders and could harm all the countries.
He said that they had sufficient time to work for protection of environment as National Environment Protection Agency had the responsibility to protect and revive the environment in accordance to the environment law, adding that the agency was to implement plans to fulfill its responsibilities in this regard.
In his speech, he asked the international community for financial and technical cooperation with the country’s national environment protection agency. He also asked the country’s relevant institutions for cooperation and close coordination in protection of environment in the country.
It is worth mentioning that the United Nations General Assembly designated 5 June as World Environment Day in 1972. The first celebration, under the slogan “Only One Earth” took place in 1974. In the following years, the World Environment Day has developed as a platform to raise awareness on the problems facing our environment such as air pollution, plastic pollution, illegal wildlife trade, sustainable consumption, sea-level increase, and food security, among others. Furthermore, the day helps drive change in consumption patterns and in national and international environmental policy.
