Work to reconstruct Takhar-Badakhshan highway started

TALOQAN: Reconstruction and repairing work of TakharBadakhshan highway worth 15 million Afghani has been started, the provincial Public Works Department said in a statement the other day. Director of the provincial public works department Mawlavi Amir Khan Huzaifa, said that over 58-kilometers of the highway are being reconstructed and the project included the construction of some retaining walls and bridges, according to the statement. “The road will be repaired from Taloqan city, the capital of Takhar, up to Kishim district of northeastern Badakhshan province within three months,” the statement quoted Huzaifa as saying. Drivers on the route hailed the project’s launch and said they faced many challenges due to rundown condition of the road since years. “The Takhar-Badakhshan highway was asphalted many years ago during the previous government, but it was neglectedfor years, many parts of the highway have been damaged by floods, the floodwater has destroyed a bridge in Shakhana Dara area, causing traffic jams for hours every day,” Qari Zabihullah, who daily drives on the road to Kalafgan district, said He expressed his pleasure over the start of reconstruction works, but urged the government to pay serious attention to the highway’s maintenance once repaired.
