We do not rely on media reports, rumors about Afghanistan, UN official

KABUL: Deputy Prime Minister for political affairs, Mawlavi Abdul Kabir met with the Special Rapporteur on the situation of Human Rights in Afghanistan Richard Bennett, here in Kabul, the deputy Prime Minister office said the other day.
Referring to human rights in Afghanistan, the UN Special Rapporteur said that he would not rely on the rumors about Afghanistan.
“I do not want to rely on media reports and rumors about Afghanistan, but wanted to monitor the human rights situation in near, distinguish between true and false and arrange a truth-based report about the country and share with the UN,” he said.
He also asked information from the country’s deputy Prime Minister about women’s role and work in the government, their type of hijab (veil) and education, freedom of press, prisoners’ situation, formation of a broad-based government, civil society situation and the Afghans health and economic condition, according to the statement.
The IEA Deputy Prime Minister Mawlavi Abdul Kabir briefed information about the issues to the UN special rapporteur and said that Afghanistan was an old member of the United Nations and remained committed to the entire agreements and conventions of the organization (if not contrary to the holy Islamic teachings), but he said some media spread rumors and false reports about Afghanistan.
“Now, human rights are secured better than the past and the entire Afghan men and women, including Hindu and Sikhs are using this blessing,” he added.
He called hijab one of the religious and cultural values and said that the Afghan women feel comfort with hijab.
“Here justice is secured. All Afghans sees their representatives in the government. All members of the previous government have been granted amnesty. Contact commission with Afghan personalities have begun its work and they would be provided with dignified live after their return to the country,” the deputy Prime Minister assured. He rejected reports as baseless about revenge murders and misbehaving with the prisoners and said: “You Mr. Richard can visit the prisoners from nearer and all parts of the country.”
He reassured that no one would be taken into prison unless sentenced by the court.
Also, the country’s acting Minister of Foreign Affairs Mawlavi Amir Khan Muttaqi in a separate meeting with the UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights Situation in Afghanistan said that the Islamic and cultural values of the Afghans should be considered in his documentaries.
The UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights Situation thanked the acting foreign minister for sharing exact information about the positive situation in Afghanistan.
