Uzbekistan ready to support Afghanistan in implementation of Qush Tepa canal: Azim Jan Nazarov

KABUL: The Uzbekistan trade delegation led by Deputy Irrigation Minister of that country Azim Jan Nazarov, met with the Acting Minister of Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock Mawlavi Attaullah Omari, here in Kabul, the ministry said in a statement Sunday. Both sides discussed some important bilateral issues including strengthening agriculture relations between the two countries and solving the challenges facing the investors of both countries, the statement said. Mawlavi Omari shared information about the ministry’s working areas with the Uzbek delegation and asked the delegation to cooperate with the Islamic emirate in the field of Agriculture, and provide Afghan farmers with modified seeds, the statement added. Qosh Tepa is a water supply project which is supposed to divert water from Amu Darya for irrigation to adjacent districts in Afghanistan through a canal of 285 km in length and 100 meters in width. Some experts believe the completion of this project will lead to the increase in crossborder violence over water as it will divert a significant amount of the Amu River, streaming along the border with Uzbekistan, into Afghanistan. Speaking at the meeting, Azim Jan Nazarov said that his country is interested in cooperating with Afghanistan in the implementation of the Qush Tepa Canal and research on the territory of Afghanistan, the statement further added.
