UNHCR should address Afghan refugees’ problems

The migration phenomenon has roots in the politics of the world great powers and that the international community and the United Nations, instead of focusing on addressing the refugees’ problems, should root out the problem of migration and address the reasons behind.

KABUL: The Ministry of Refugees and Repatriation (MRR) asked the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) for cooperation in voluntary return of Afghan refugees.
Officials of the Ministry of Refugees and Repatriation say that they have plans for the voluntary return of Afghan refugees. But the implementation of the program requires full support of the international community and the United Nations.
Meanwhile, Khalil-ur-Rahman Haqqani Acting Minister of Refugees and Repatriations said in a ceremony held to commemorate World Refugee Day that the migration crisis began in Afghanistan with the invasion of the former Soviet Red Army and still continues.
Haqqani added that in the last 20 years, the migration of Afghan people has continued and millions of people have fled the country due to war and airstrikes led by the U.S. and NATO forces.

Meanwhile, Deputy Minister of Refugees and Repatriation, Mohammad Arsalah Kharoti, said that 7 million Afghans have migrated to the neighboring, region and the world countries.
According to Kharoti, 6 million Afghan refugees are living in neighboring countries, of which 3 million are in Pakistan and 3 million in Iran.
Deputy Minister of Refugees and Repatriations, pointing to the problems of Afghan refugees abroad, called on the host countries to address Afghan refugees problems and to deal with them in accordance with international conventions.
“Currently security is ensured in the country, but only security cannot prevent migrants from returning to the country and reintegrating to the society”, said Kharoti.
He called the implementation of large economic projects and employment as a prerequisite for the voluntary return of migrants to the country and called for the cooperation of the international community and the United Nations in this regard.
Speaking at the same gathering, the head of the UNHCR’s Representative, Leonard Zulu, said that around 24 million Afghans are facing acute hunger.
According to him, more than 6 million Afghans are living outside Afghanistan.
The deputy spokesman for the Islamic Emirate, Bilal Karimi, said there are reports of Afghan refugees being mistreated in some countries.
“Unfortunately, we have heard some reports that our citizens are facing problems in some countries. We call on the officials of these countries to understand the situation of the Afghans based on their humanitarian and Islamic faith,” he said.
This day is named for the protection of human beings for various reasons such as war, violence, lack of physical and mental security.
This year, World Migration Day is being celebrated as the migration crisis become a major global problem, and for the first time, migration exceeded 100 million people.
