UN introduces new deputy representative to Afghanistan

German diplomat Markus Potzel was appointed as the UN’s new deputy representative for Afghanistan.
Potzel will be also in charge of the UN Afghanistan Mission (UNAMA).
A career diplomat, Potzel served as Germany’s ambassador to Afghanistan from 2014 to 2016.
He has gott on nearly eight years of professional experience working in Afghanistan.
Markus Potzel has followed Afghanistan changes and has always expressed his opinions about the country’s issues.
According to Afghan experts, Potzel knows Afghanistan national languages and is aware of the country’s history and culture.
He is an experienced diplomat who knows much about Afghanistan neighboring countries particularly Iran and Pakistan, India and Central Asian countries.
The UN’s new deputy representative to Afghanistan brings to the position more than 27 years of professional experience in diplomacy and international cooperation, including eight years of professional experience working in and on Afghanistan.
Potzel was born in 1965 and has worked as a diplomat for 30 years.
He has held several senior positions with the German Ministry for Foreign Affairs, including as German Special Representative for Afghanistan (2017-2021).
Potzel holds a master’s degree in Persian and English language and literature studies from the Humboldt University Berlin and the University of Dushanbe in Tajikistan.
A career diplomat, Potzel served as Germany’s ambassador to Afghanistan from 2014 to 2016.
He succeeds Mette Knudsen of Denmark, UNAMA’s former political deputy for Afghanistan.
Markus Potzel was introduced as the UN’s new deputy representative for Afghanistan after Deborah Lyons recently ended her tenure as the UN’s chief representative in Afghanistan.
For almost two decades, UNAMA has been responsible for coordinating political development and humanitarian aid in Afghanistan. It also monitors human rights compliance.
The body, along with other aid agencies, is struggling to raise the $4.4 billion (€4.16 billion) they said that it was needed for humanitarian aid in Afghanistan this year.
Efforts towards institutionalization of peace and stability, improvement of Afghanistan relations with all other countries in the world, renovation of economic sector, counter corruption and narcotics, maintaining and monitoring human rights and prevention of conflicts are considered the UNAMA’s key activities in the country.
The UN has been dependent on cooperation with the Islamic emirate since the IEA takeover in mid-August 2021.
