UN appoints Roza Otunbaeva as UN envoy for Afghanistan

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has named former president of Kyrgyzstan Roza Otunbaeva as the UN’s new special representative for Afghanistan.
In a statement released by the UN office on September 2 said that Otunbaeva, 72, replaces Deborah Lyons, who stepped down in mid-June. Otunbaeva became interim president of Kyrgyzstan in April 2010 after a bloody uprising forced then-President Kurmanbek Bakiev into exile. She relinquished the presidency the following year after new elections were organized.
Otunbaeva also served as foreign minister of Kyrgyzstan and held several high-ranked diplomatic positions as her country’s ambassador to the United States, Canada, and Britain. She holds a Doctorate in Philosophy from Moscow State University and a degree from the Philosophy Faculty of the Moscow State University.
Currently, she is a member of the UN Secretary-General’s High-Level Advisory Board on Mediation and the Head of the Roza Otunbaeva Initiative Foundation in Kyrgyzstan, the statement said.
One of the goals of the United Nations is to achieve international cooperation to resolve economic, social, cultural and human problems around the world.
The organization is a good address for receiving and transferring humanitarian aid in natural and man-made disasters whose damages are beyond the ability of national authorities to compensate.
Efforts to institutionalize peace and stability, improve Afghanistan’s relations with other countries, rebuild economic sectors, fight against administrative corruption and drugs, ensure and monitor human rights, and prevent conflicts are among the main activities of UNAMA in the country.
It is worth mentioning that UNAMA has been responsible for the coordination of humanitarian aid in Afghanistan for almost two decades.
