Snow leopard to be again released, ministry

KABUL: A snow leopard which had been captured for killing 30 livestock in the country’s northeastern province of Badakhshan, after necessary treatment will be released to nature, the Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock said in a statement the other day. The snow leopard which has been captured by the authorities in the Zibak district of Badakhshan province due to frequent attacks on livestock, is currently being kept in a safe place and after inspection and necessary treatment by veterinarians of the ministry will be released, the statement said. The snow leopard is a rare and endangered species worldwide, and hunting these animals is strictly prohibited. During the winter season, the people of Badakhshan live in fear of snow leopard attacks on their livestock, and they often struggle to protect their animals from these predators. Exact numbers are difficult to estimate but research suggests between 100 to 200 snow leopards exist in the country. Snow leopard habitat in Afghanistan is in the Badakhshan Province of the country.
