Recreational park to be reconstructed in Kabul

The municipality’s greenery department director Mawlavi Abdul Wakil Mutawakil said during the launch of the project that the municipality would address all problems in the city and would create more parks.

KABUL: Construction work on a recreational park worth 15 million Afghani (some 209,515 U.S. dollars) kicked off in the Taimani area of Kabul city, the Kabul Municipality said in a statement Friday. The municipality’s greenery department director Mawlavi Abdul Wakil Mutawakil said during the launch of the project that the municipality would address all problems in the city and would create more parks. “The park will have proper facilities and will be constructed on over 10 acres of land and will have surrounding wall, paths, lawn, ornamental trees, and flowers,” the statement quoted Mutawakil as saying. He said the park with financial assistance from the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) will be constructed within four months and will generate job opportunities for hundreds of people. A few days ago, construction work on five development projects worth 147 million Afghani had been completed by the Kabul Municipality in the 12th and 8th districts of Kabul. The projects included a commercial market, two amusement parks, and two roads. According to the municipality, 206 development projects have been implemented in the past year and hundreds of development projects worth 6.18 billion Afghani will be implemented within 1403 solar year in the capital Kabul city Expressing pleasure over the implementation of development projects, Romal a resident of Kabul city said Kabul is the only capital city in the world that does not have basic urban services such as water and sewage systems, gas and heat distribution, and, above all, public transport. The city lies in a mountainous area, where the main arteries must bypass high mountains. “There are no tunnels, multi-level junctions, smart traffic signaling systems, or other facilities that can help manage the traffic in the city. Sidewalks are used by merchants who sell their goods before trade. Services such as carpenters, blacksmiths, and craftsmen also work on roads and sidewalks,” he said. Eng. Haroon another resident of Kabul city said that there are no traffic lanes for fast and slow transport and the transport of residents is ensured only by the individuals who operate small and mediumsized vehicles as a taxi service. “Due to the lack of bus stops and taxi stands, the drivers halt their vehicles at no parking spots which causes more congestion”. The traffic police do not penalize traffic offenses. Armed forces, VIPs, international organizations, and governmental buildings block many streets and roads. On the roads, everybody builds speed breakers wherever they wish to and nobody regulates it. Street vendors sell goods in the middle of the road. The transport mix must be as diverse as the city’s various activities. He asked the relevant organs to pay serious attention to implementing development projects for the standardization and modernization of Kabul City. Hamid
