Qushtepa Canal; biggest water project in Afghanistan history

With the Islamic Emirate of Afghan istan (IEA) takeover, practical construction work on Qush Tepa Canal was started in 2022. Construction work on the canal was opened in Balkh by the country’s Ministry of Finance and the ministry’s National Development Corporation (NDC) led by Abdul Rahman Atash is responsible for its construction. “The opening ceremony held for starting practical work on the Qush Tepa Canal was attended by Deputy Prime Minister on Economic Affairs Mullah Abdul Ghani Beradar, Minister of Finance Mullah Hedayatullah Badri, Minister of Industry and Commerce Nooruddin Azizi, Minister of Information and culture Mullah Khairullah Khairkhwa, Minister of Borders and Tribal Affairs Noorullah Noori, Minister of Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock Abdul Rahman Rashid, the Islamic Emirate spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid, executive chief of National Development Corporation (NDC) Abdul Rahman Atash and local officials and dignitaries of Balkh, Jawzjan and Faryab. In the ceremony, executive chief of National Development Corporation Abdul Rahman Atash spoke and said with the implementation of this great project, work opportunities will be provided to 250,000 work ers and nearly 3.5 million acres of land will be irrigated, which will provide great opportunities for development of agriculture in the country. Afterward, the Minister of Industry and Commerce Nooruniddin Azizi spoke and thanked the IEA leadership for their consideration to the implementation of great projects in the country. He said that the Qush Tepa was an important, national and international project and with the completion of this project, agriculture and livestock would be developed. He asked the country’s national traders to return and invest in the country. In the ceremony, Mullah Abdul Ghani Beradar, Deputy Prime Minister on Economic Affairs, also spoke and said: “Today, we are here to make the people’s great aspiration true. It is a major national project which is unprecedented in the country level. We have paid particular attention to this project as it is a key uplift project and let congratulate it to all the people of Afghanistan.” He added that the Islamic Emirate was also determined to soon open and implement such major development projects in the country. Pointing to the importance of this major project, Mullah Beradar said work on this major canal with its 285 km length would be completed in five years, adding that with the completion of this major project, Afghanistan would reach selfsufficiency in wheat as agriculture would be developed in the country. He said that the construction of the Qush Tepa Canal was in top priority of the Islamic Emirate and they would be fully cooperative with the National Development Corporation (NDC) to complete the project, asking the people to cooperate with the Islamic Emirate in this regard. Afterwards, Minister of Information and Culture Mullah Khairullah Khaikhwa spoke and said that lots of projects have been opened in the country, but the Qush Tepa Canal project was more important than others as it has been funded by the Islamic Emirate, adding that with completion of this major project, Afghanistan would reach self-sufficiency and economic independency. Meanwhile, Minister of Borders Noorullah Noori spoke and said Afghanistan was a rich country and they would completely make use of richness and opening the Qush Tepa Canal was a good example. He said that in very short period of time, the Islamic Emirate has been able to launch a major national project in the country, adding that the Islamic Emirate would soon launch such major projects in the country. In the ceremony, acting minister of agriculture, irrigation and livestock Abdul Rahman Rashid spoke and said that 70 percent of the country’s population was engaged in agriculture. “Today, we witness good news in terms of the development of agriculture in the country. With the completion of the Qush Tepa Canal, agriculture and livestock will further develop and Afghanistan will then reach self-sufficiency in providing wheat and grain.” He asked the country’s traders to return and take part in the construction of the country. In the ceremony, elders and dignitaries from Balkh, Jawzjan and Faryab provinces thanked the Islamic Emirate for opening this major national project and assured of overall cooperation in implementation and completion of the project. At the end of the ceremony, Deputy Minister of Publication Affairs of the Ministry of Information and Culture and spokesperson of the Islamic Emirate Zabihullah Mujahid said that countries could not be built with foreign aids but could be built with continued efforts of their people. He asked all the countrymen to fully support to the implementation of the Qush Tepa Canal.” Munir Ahmad Tanwir
