Qush Tepa canal; biggest water project in Afghanistan history

Part V

Economic value of Qush Tepa canal: It is said that the total machinery working on Qush Tepa canal has now reached to 5000. It is clear that thousands of workers as engineers, professional workers, drivers and others are working and engaged in construction process of the canal. For example, if at least three workers are assumed for each car, it can be said that 15,000 people are working in the project. Some key points of the canal’s economic value: 1. Water in the deserts of the canal: The area from which the Qush Tepe canal originates is a fertile land that has a lot of underground water resources. As the desert has its own water, the water of the canal will flow smoothly just when it is opened. From the Amu river, where the canal has been separated, the area is very high and the water cannot find its way to the ground through the channels. It is also written in the plan of Shaheed Sardar Mohammad Daud Khan that the water would be pumped up to 10 kilometers to this area. The desert would be watered through sub-canals from Dawlatabad district. 2. Passing the canal over an uninhabited area: The Qush Tepa canal has started on an area where the level of residneital houses and agriculture was very low. The area has been completely desertt and there has been some residential houses and agricultural fields far from this area. It is a matter of happiness that with completion of the Qush Tepa canal, there will be increasing development in all areas as there will be more water for agricultural fields. 3. Desert with proper climate: The climate of the northern parts of Afghanistan is more suitable for agriculture than some other areas in the country as the climate is neither too cold nor too hot. Even if it is hot, the field is suitable for agriculture. The land on which the Qush Tepa canal is flowing has some characteristics: • The land is mostly plain as there are no mountains, hills, and not valleys. Most of them are arable lands that are good for cultivation and residential houses can be built at low cost. • The climate is much suitable for agriclutre. This can convince more people to have agricultural fields. • With completion of the Qush Tepa canal, livestock will develop in most northern provinces where most people have already known how to raise animals. Part V • The central point of the northern provinces: Another value of this canal is that the canal passes directly in three provinces that are considered as the central point of the country’s north. With the completion of the canal, not only these provinces but also the neighboring provinces will develop. The most important point is that the canal will bring prosperity and bright future not only to the country’s north but also the whole country. 4. Construction of railway on the desert: As now the Trans-Afghan Railway project is underway, it is determined that the project in which one part of the railway starting from Hairatan along the Qush Tepa canal will bring economic development to the area and make the canal more valuable.
