Prominent Afghan journalist, author passes away

KABUL: Nabi Misdaq, founder and former head of the Pashto department at the BBC World Service, died of COVID-19 at the age of 77, sources confirmed. Nabi Misdaq recently served as President Ashraf Ghani’s advisor in media affairs and has written many articles in both Persian and Pashto languages. In a statement, President Ghani condoled his death saying “for years, late Misdaq raised the voice of oppressed Afghans through journalism and, as a writer, guided the younger generation to a brighter historical path by telling the truth about the current tragedy. He also worked tirelessly to build a strong bond between the people and the state, and his death is a great loss,” the President said. Nabi Misdaq was educated in England, securing a scholarship in the early 1960s that paved a way for him to get educated in the U.K. He had BS.c. Hon. from London School of Economics and an M.A and Ph.D. from Sussex University in Britain. Misdaq had worked for almost 20 years for the BBC World Service.In the 2014 election, Misdaq served as a spokesperson to President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani’s campaign and in 2015 he was appointed as an advisor to President in the media affairs.
