President Ghani, Stoltenberg discuss consultative Loya Jirga for peace

KABUL: President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani and NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg have discussed the Afghan-led peace initiative and plan to convene a consultative Loya Jirga, a statement from the presidential press office said yesterday.
The two leaders met late Friday on the sidelines of an international security conference in Munich.
Stoltenberg said NATO and allies were committed to supporting and cooperating with Afghanistan. He added peace negotiations without Afghan leadership would not come to fruition.
President Ghani thanked NATO and all allies for their support and commitment, saying a consultative Loya Jirga on reconciliation would be convened soon. According to another report, President Ghani also met European Union High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini. Bothsides discussed the Kabul process, a grand tribal assembly for peace and other matters of mutual interest.
Mogherini reiterated EU’s support for an Afghan peace process and expressed readiness for all-out cooperation. Ghani thanked EU for its consistent support hailing its role in Afghanistan as important.
