President Ghani seeks Azerbaijani investments in Afghanistan

KABUL:  Led by Azerbaijan minister for economic development Shahin Mustafayev, the Azerbaijani investors met with the President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani during his stay in Baku on Thursday afternoon, a statement from the Presidential Palace in Kabul said on Friday.
Azerbaijani businessmen during a meeting with President Ghani have expressed their willingness to make investment in  Afghanistan  sectors of agriculture, transport, mining, construction, energy and others. Acting Afghan commerce and industry minister Ajmal Ahmadi briefed the meeting about opportunities and facilities for investment in Afghanistan’s energy, mining, agriculture, transport, cement and other areas and encouraged the Azerbaijani traders to invest in these sectors.
President Ghani said Azerbaijan could be a good market for Afghanistan’s dry and fresh fruits and saffron. He said investment in infrastructure development was the Afghan government’s priority and called for direct or mutual investment in this sector.
“We have paved the ground for work and investment besides creating transit corridors, highways and railroad to facilitate trade,” said President Ghani, who drew the Azerbaijani investors’ attention towards investment opportunities in Afghanistan’s agriculture, water and energy, land management, residential schemes and others.
The president said increased trade relations were essential for improved bilateral ties and peace and stability of the region.
For his part, Shahin Mustafayev said trade ties between the two countries should be enhanced like their political and cultural relations which he said were expanding day by day.
He called as important recently signed agreements in areas of railways line, culture, telecom and IT sectors between the two countries. He announced that his country would host an exhibition of Afghan products.
Shahin Mustafayev said he had fruitful discussions with the Afghan delegation on bilateral cooperation and working plans would be shared with the Afghan side soon.
Later, the Azerbaijani investors briefed the meeting about their companies’ products, capacity and experience and said they were ready to invest in Afghanistan’s agriculture, transport, mining, construction materials, energy and other sectors.
