Precipitous US drawdown to affect region’s security

In a bipartisan rebuke to US President Donald Trump, the country’s Senate voted 68-23 Thursday to advance an amendment that would oppose withdrawal of U.S. troops fromAfghanistan and Syria.
The amendment by the US Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell comes after Trump called for a drawdown of troops in both of those countries. The measure says the Islamic State and al-Qaida militants still pose a serious threat to the United States, and it warns that “a precipitous withdrawal” of U.S. forces from those countries could “allow terrorists to regroup, destabilize critical regions and create vacuums that could be filled by Iran or Russia.”
Trump abruptly tweeted plans for a U.S. pullout from Syria in December, arguing that the Islamic State had been defeated even though his intelligence chiefs have said the group remains a threat. Trump also ordered the military to develop plans to remove up to half of the 14,000 U.S. forces in Afghanistan.
Meanwhile on Friday, Trump tweeted he had inherited a total mess in Syria and Afghanistan. “We spend $50 Billion a year in Afghanistan and have hit them so hard that we are now talking peace after 18 long years.”
The recent development came at the time that the chief American diplomat, Zalmay Khalilzad, said earlier that had been an agreement on a “framework” for two key issues — that the Taliban would prevent the use of Afghan territory by terror groups like Al Qaeda against the United States, and that the Americans would agree to withdrawing their forces.
President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani has recently said that no one was in the favor of foreign forces presence in the country, adding the ongoing situation in the region and the threats of terrorists suggest dilatorywithdrawal of the forces. He has time and again emphasized on capabilities of the Afghan forces in war on terror and assured both the Afghan nation and international community of the forces’ intention to safeguard the achievements and protect the territorial integrity.
As per president’s saying, today’s Afghanistan is totally different with the one of 90’s and Afghans are fully aware of the ongoing political developments in the region. Afghanistan’s stability depends to stability of the whole region, but insecurity in the country would definitely affect the security of the whole region and even that of the western countries.
US as the strategic partner of the Afghan government has fully supported democratic process and Afghans’ campaign against terrorism and extremism. But the US job is still not done and the precipitous drawdowns of the US forces from Afghanistan would have negative consequences, since 20 international terrorists still posing serious threats to security and stability of the country.
The current values and achievements that have come about were the product of tens of years of bellicose struggle that the Afghan people paid heavy cost to earn. It is very clear that the Taliban group is not content with anything, but the closure of the human values enshrined in the current constitution of Afghanistan.
Therefore, the only way for the people and the current government of Afghanistan is to stand against the illegitimate demands of the Taliban and to prevent from returning to the black era. Afghanswouldnever go back to the past under any circumstances and would never submit everything to the Taliban.
This is the only legitimate and humanitarian demand of all the people of Afghanistan. We will not go back to the past and would never allow the country to fall into hands of aliens and turn to be safe havens for terrorist and extremists.”
