Precious stones smuggle attempt foiled in Torkham border

KABUL: Customs officials have thwarted the trafficking of huge amounts of precious stones and statues in Torkham ground port, the ministry of finance said in a statement the other day. The stones were being smuggled via the Torkham ground port of the country’s eastern province of Nangarhar, to the neighboring country of Pakistan, according to the statement. “Shipment of 10 tons of crushed lithium stone, statues and gemstone beads, discovered and foiled, which were being smuggled by Mati Sami extraction company to Pakistan,” the statement said. All relevant officials in the country’s customs houses were tasked and strictly monitoring and no one will be allowed to export or import commodities without legal procedures, the statement added. A few days ago, a huge amount of precious stones including 97.50 kilograms of lithium and 930 kilograms of nephrites, which had been smuggled to Pakistan, have also been discovered and seized in the Torkham crossing border.
