Poppy on nearly 100 acres of land destroyed, 5 arrested in different provinces

KABUL: Poppy on 99 acres of land has been destroyed and five people in connection with producing and trafficking of narcotics arrested in various provinces of the country, the Ministry of Interior said in a statement the other day. “Counter-narcotics police personnel of the ministry in a series of poppy farmlands destruction campaigns have eradicated hundreds of poopy farmlands including 97 acres of poppy farmlands in Khash district of Badakhshan province and 2 acres of poppy farmlands in Bamyan province,” the statement said. Also, five individuals in connection with producing, purchasing and trafficking of narcotics have been arrested including three from Nangahar and two from Kapisa provinces, the statement added. The detainees have been taken to the justice and judiciary organs for further investigations into their files, according to the statement. A few weeks ago, Hundreds of acres of poppy farmlands had been destroyed and dozens of people in connection with producing and trafficking of narcotics were arrested in various provinces of the country. Poopy farmlands including447 acres of poppy farmlands in Darayim and Yaftal districts of Badakhshan and dozens of acres of poppy farmlands in Paktika and Kabul provinces had been destroyed A drug processing lab had been discovered and destroyed in the country’s southern province of Kandahar and two individuals had been arrested in connection with the smuggling of 900 kilograms of methamphetamines in the province. Furthermore, counter-narcotics police forces during several clearance operations had arrested four individuals on charges of selling and trafficking 2,100 kilograms of heroin in Kabul and 13 others in Khost, Kapisa, Herat, Kunduz and other provinces of the country. For rooting out the narcotics, lots of efforts have been made and a series of plans including public awareness anti-drug campaign, were also taken by the counternarcotics police personnel of the ministry to eradicate poppy farmlands as well as the drug-producing factories across the country. Pointing to the necessity of countering the cultivation of poppy, the counter-narcotics police personnel asked the people to avoid cultivation, selling, purchasing and smuggling of the drugs across the country, as without the full cooperation of the people rooting out of poppy cultivation will be impossible in the country. Therefore, there is an urgent need for all Afghans jointly work towards the eradication of poppy cultivation across the country. Mohammad Nabi Naibi
