Pertussis affects 300, kills 2 children in Zabul

QALAT: As many as 300 people mostly children have been affected by pertussis (whooping cough), in southern Zabul province, and two children died of the disease, Dr. Abdul Hakim Hakimi, the provincial public health director said Monday. “The diseases broke out in Sori district of the province, affecting at least 300 people, mostly children and killing two others in one week,” Hakimi told media.
He added that an emergency team of health officials has been sent to the district to treat those with the disease.
The public health office of the province asked the people not to leave their areas for few days to avoid further outbreak of the transmissible illness.
Pertussis is a highly contagious, respiratory disease which is known for uncontrollable violent coughing that often makes it hard to breathe.
People, mostly children, with the disease often need to take deep breathes, which result in whooping sound. The Kabul Times
