Persistent rain washes out second Afghanistan-Ireland ODI

Earlier in the afternoon, Afghan skipper Asghar Afghan won the toss and elected to bat first. Wicket-keeper batsman Ikram Alikhil and fast bowler Sayed Shirzad were the debutants for Afghanistan and received their well-deserving ODI caps by head coach Phil Simmons and bowling coach Charl Langaveldt, respectively.
Afghanistan were 250/7 in 48.3 overs when the covers were brought on due to heavy rain. There was a short break in the downpour paving a chance for resumption of play but it returned shortly halting the anticipated pitch inspection.
Opening batsman Hazratullah Zazai scored his maiden half-century in ODIs before he was caught out for 67. There were two other half-centuries for Afghanistan by Rahmat Shah and Hashmatullah Shahidi who contributed with 54 and 52 runs, respectively.
Persistent rain denied Ireland the chance to bat and the umpires decided to call off the match at 7:50pm IST.
Afghanistan leads the five-match series 1-0 with third ODI scheduled for Tuesday 5th March 2019.
