Over 2 tons of Saffron exported from Herat to world markets in past months

HERAT: A significant amount of 2.18 tons of saffron worth 21.5 million U.S. dollars have been exported from the country’s western province of Herat to the world markets in the past months of the current solar year, the provincial Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock Department said in a statement the other day. Director of the provincial agriculture, irrigation and livestock department Mawlavi Peer Mohammad Halimi, said last year’s saffron yield was 20 tons and this year’s harvest is 30 tons, which shows a significant increase compared to the previous year, according to the statement. Meanwhile, Mohammad Amin Yousuf, the Head of the Chamber of Commerce and Investment, said Herat had exported 2.18 tons of saffron to Arab countries and India in the last eight months of the current solar year. Expressing pleasure over the increase in saffron price, Abdul Qadir, one of the traders said the saffron price was weak last year compared to the previous one; fortunately, this year the price of saffron per kilo reached 80,000 Afghanis.
