The country’s Millie Bus Enterprise has said that they’re trying to increase the number of Millie buses to further provides services to people in big cities particularly Kabul, the capital.
Head of the enterprise Mohammad Ayoub Mohammadi while considering the protection of the national buses as important says the buses are in the service of the people as their aims are to provide transportation services with low motor fare and to address the current crowd in the city.
“We’re making effort to provide the most-populated cities with Millie buses although most of the buses have been broken down in the past 20 years,” Ayoubi said, adding that the enterprise will provide new buses as the issue has been shared with the Ministry of Finance already.
He further said that the issue has been also shared with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as some foreign countries particularly India has been contacted for providing Afghanistan with new buses. Previously, India had promised to provide Afghanistan with 1,000 buses. The Indian government is asked to send the buses to Afghanistan as part of their humanitarian assistance to the country. Meanwhile, deputy of the Millie Bus Enterprise has said that currently some Millie buses are operating to provide services to residents of Kabul in three parts of the city as 1st, 2nd and 3rd city districts on daily basis.
According to the deputy of the enterprise, currently, there are 1,096 buses are operating in Kabul, Herat, Balkh, Nangarhar, Kandahar, Laghman, Kapisa, Jawzjan and Paktia provinces of the country. It is determined that the buses will start operation in other provinces of the country too.
Millie Bus (National Bus), is a government-run bus service operating across Afghanistan. Operations are managed by the Afghan Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation.
Millie buses are among the cheapest mode of transport in Kabul, often resulting in overcrowding during peak hours.
The Millie Bus Enterprise, which runs the service, operates services primarily in Kabul, along with services in other areas including Panjshir, Parwan, Kandahar, Maidan Wardak, and other provinces of the country.
It is worth mentioning that Millie Bus dates back to the late 1920s. The infrastructure of Millie Bus including parking lots, workshops and administrative sections. During the presidency of Daud Khan, the services were started under the charter of Mirwais Company. Currently, 100 buses have resumed operation in Kabul city, where the enterprise has collected nearly 1.5 million AFG incomes.
