NUG leaders meet US envoy Khalilzad, discuss peace process

KABUL: National Unity Government Leaders, President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani and Chief Executive Dr. Abdullah met US Special Envoy for Afghanistan Peace Zalmay Khalilzad and both sides discussed the ongoing peace process. On a multination trip to facilitate intra-Afghan peace talks, Khalilzad on Monday arrived in the capital Kabul and held meetings with several officials.
According to a presidential statement, the two sides discussed Doha talks and the importance of Afghan-led peace process. The US Ambassador John Bass, NATO commander Gen. Scott Miller, 2nd Vice-President Sarwar Danesh, President Chief of Staff Abdul Salam Rahimi, IDLG head Matin Bek and presidential advisor Fazal Fazli were also present during the meeting with US envoy. At a meeting with Chief Executive Officer Dr. Abdullah Abdullah, the visiting diplomat said the US had no secret deal with Taliban in ongoing negotiations. He discussed the outcome of Qatar talks between the US and Taliban with Abdullah, the chief executive’s office said in a statement. US Ambassador John Bass and Foreign Minister Salahuddin Rabbani were also present at the meeting, in which Khalilzad shared the outcome of the Doha meeting and his swing through the region.
