New appointments in ministries of defense and interior have been met with different reactions from Afghan military experts. In their interviews with The Kabul Times correspondent, Afghan military experts consider the new appointments in the country’s security sector as necessary for reforms in the country’s defense and security organs.
They believe that it is necessary that reforms should be implemented in the country’s security organs particularly within ministries of interior and defense rather then high-ranking security officials are sacked with increasing insecurities or terrorist attacks.
“We should take urgent and precision step in making a regular security system as professional security officials should be appointed in security organs. Besides, considerable changes within the country’s defense and security organs can help maintain better security in the country,” said Mirza Mohammad Yarmand, former deputy minister of interior.
He said that overall coordination was needed between the country’s defense and security organs.
Dawlat Waziri, former military officials, says corruption can be rooted out in defense and security sector if professional military cadres are appointed within the ministries of defense and security.
“Due to continued delay in reforms in security organs, security challenges have increased recently in the country,” Waziri said, adding that increasing threats and security challenges have caused that reforms or strategic development faced with challenges.
On the other hand, head of Afghanistan High Council for National Reconciliation Dr. Abdullah Abdullah by pointing to recent appointment in the country’s defense and security sector said decision in connection with sacking Masoud Andarabi as minister of interior has been against political agreement, saying that the decision was against the country’s national interests.
Meanwhile, Afghanistan National Security Advisor Hamdullah Muhib has said that the new appointments have been made for necessary reforms in leadership of the country’s defense and security organs, improvement in security situation and protection of the life of people as well as better execution of the self-sufficiency program.
“The changes have been made for reforms rather than political,” Muhib said, adding that it is determined that new military faces will take urgent steps in improvement of security and rule of law and counter crimes in the country.
Another Afghan military expert Atiqullah Amarkhil says in recent years they have witnessed considerable changes in leadership of the country’s defense and security organs, but unfortunately no changes have come in security situation. He said that with new appointment they hoped some improvement in security situation in the country.
Based on new appointment announced by presidential office, Hayatullah Hayat has been introduced as acting minister of interior, Yasin Zia as acting minister of defense and Ayoub Salangi as deputy minister of interior.
