Ministry’s achievement; thousands of drug addicts rejoin families in 2 years

Over four decades of war, continued economic crisis, and supply of cheap drugs in Afghanistan have pushed thousands of Afghans into drug addiction, a problem that the Islamic Emirate is now trying to tackle by rounding up addicts and treating them in special facilities. With the Islamic Emirate takeover, efforts have been made to round up drug addicts from provincial cities across the country and treat them in special facilities. Based on information of the anti-narcotics deputy ministry, there are around 3.5 million drug addicts in the country. The Islamic Emirate opened a new 5,000-bed facility for the treatment of drug addicts in the country in early 2023. Besides, special treatment facilities have been alsoopened in other provinces of the country. With starting the campaign of rounding up drug addicts, thousands of addicts have been rounded up in various provinces in dozens for treatment. The leadership of the Islamic Emirate has said that treating addicts is the IEA’s moral responsibility. Currently, there are dozens of drug treatment centers operating in the country. In recent months, hundreds of addicts have been treated and reunited with their families in various provinces, including Kabul, the capital. Just this week, nearly 1,300 drug addicts were treated and reunited with their families after undergoing 10 to 16 months of treatment at a rehabilitation center in western Herat province. Mawlavi Hayatullah Rohani, provincial counter-narcotics director, has said that the rehabilitated individuals have been reunited with their families ahead of Eid-ul-Adha. He said the addicts enjoyed all necessary facilities at the rehabilitation center and the campaign to round up drug addicts in Herat city continued, adding that they were also taught tailoring skills at the rehabilitation center so that they could eke out a living after reuniting with their families. A number of addicts who have been treated at the facility in Herat city and reunited with their families are happy and appreciate the government for providing all necessary facilities to be treated at the facility. The treated individuals have been also pleased with the services at the center. All the individuals who have been treated and reunited with their families have been rounded up from different districts of the province. They received treatment at the rehabilitation center in Herat for the last 11 months. While appreciating the Islamic Emirate, especially the medical team of the facility, the treated individuals urged the youth to avoid friendship with drug addicts and asked the Islamic Emirate to provide the youth with employment opportunities. It is worth mentioning that nearly 5,000 drug addicts are currently under treatment at facilities in the province. It is worth mentioning that drug addicts’ rehabilitation centers have been opened in many provinces, including the capital Kabul and thousands of addicts have been rounded up and received treatment.
