FARYAB: Three children were killed and three others injured as a mine left over from the past wars went off in the country’s northern Faryab province on Sunday, provincial director for Information and Culture Mawlavi Shamsullah Mohammadi said on Monday. A group of children found a toy-like device in the Khwja Sabz Posh district of Faryab province on Sunday afternoon and began playing with it, but the device exploded suddenly, killing three children on the spot and injuring three others, Mohammadi added. The injured children have been taken to a nearby hospital for medical treatment. A similar accident claimed the life of a man in Afghanistan’s eastern Wardak province a couple of weeks ago. Afghanistan reportedly is one of the most mine-contaminated countries in the world as dozens of people, mostly children, are killed and maimed every month due to blasts of unexploded ordnances left over from the past four decades of wars and civil strife.
