Known Hafiz al-Quran, religious scholar Qari Barakatullah Salim passes away

KABUL: One of the country’s renowned memorizers of the Holy Quran and prominent religious scholars Al-Haj Qari Barakatullah Salim passed away due to a serious illness he was suffering, early on Saturday, his relatives told media. The Spokesman of the Islamic Emirate Mawlavi Zabihullah Mujahid, in a statement on his X page, on Saturday, expressed his deepest sorrow over the demise of the known memorizer of the Holy Quran, Al-Haj Qari Barkatullah Salim and called his death a great loss to the country’s Ulama and spiritual society and the whole Islamic Ummah. Mujahid wished him paradise and peace for his soul and great patience for his bereaved family and colleagues. Qari Barakatullah had learned Tajweed from his father and attended a local Quran school [Madrasa] when he was five and managed to memorize the entire Quran to his memory at the age of nine. Then departed for Egypt to acquire knowledge from prominent Qaris [Memorizers] such as Sheikh Mahmoud Khalil al-Hussary and Abul Ainain Shuaisha. After returning to Afghanistan Qari Salim managed to establish a new approach to the memorization of the Quran which was different from the approaches of the time in Afghanistan and Pakistan. He started cooperation with Radio Kabul and soon became a famous Quran reciter. Saleem also launched the association of Afghanistan’s qaris in the 1990s and still, he was the head of the society. As one of the prominent Quran teachers in the country, he has trained more than 800 Quran memorizers in the past 52 years.
