Khalilzad briefs NATO allies on Afghan peace process

KABUL: US Special Representative for Afghanistan Reconciliation Zalmay Khalilzad who is on a multi-nation trip as part of his efforts for facilitating the peace process in Afghanistan on Thursday met with NATO Secretary General and discussed the Afghan peace. 
NATO spokesperson Oana Lungescu said in a tweet that Khalilzad met NATO chief as part of regular consultations on Afghan peace.  She said that Khalilzad “briefed NATO Allies and Resolute Support partners on the ongoing efforts for peace in Afghanistan.
According to the US Department of State, in this trip, Khalilzad will visit Afghanistan, the United Kingdom, Belgium, Pakistan, Uzbekistan, Jordan and Qatar from March 25 to April 10. 
His trip is part of the overall effort to facilitate a peace process that brings all Afghan parties together in inclusive intra-Afghan negotiations.
In Kabul, Khalilzad will consult with the Afghan government and other Afghans about the status of US talks with the Taliban, encourage efforts to form an inclusive negotiating team, and discuss next steps in intra-Afghan discussions and negotiations, the US Department of State said in a statement this week. 
This comes as Khalilzad agreed in draft on foreign forces withdrawal and counterterrorism assurances after 16-day talks in Qatar which ended on March 14.
