Key bridge linking Kunar’s two districts on the verge of collapse

A key bridge in Kotaki area of Narang district in Kunar is at risk of collapse. Local residents are accusing former local officials of corruption in construction projects in the province. According to local residents, the then-corrupt officials did not pay attention to the quality of the projects in the province; therefore, the bridge which was constructed during the republic is now at risk of collapse. Local people are asking the Islamic Emirate to bring all corrupt individuals to justice as most of them were involved in the completion of such lowquality projects in the country. “This Pashad bridge has almost faced with the destiny of Zeri Baba bridge which had collapsed already due to low quality. Both had been constructed by the same construction company,” said Ilham Hamdard, a resident of Pashad. He asked the Islamic Emirate to identify those involved in corruption during the republic as most of the projects have been considered as low quality, hoping that the bridge was timely reconstructed by the Islamic Emirate, or the people would face with lots of problems if it collapsed. Some pillars of the bridge having seven pillars have been damaged and it is about to collapse. Local people say traffic on the bridge has been also suspended due to its possible collapse. “When the bridge was constructed, the people got happy as the bridge had provided them with all facilities. People could easily cross over the river. Besides, patients were timely taken to hospitals,” said Shakirullah, a resident of Pashad. He said local residents on both sides of the river would face with lots of problems if the bridge collapsed, asking relevant government departments to pay particular attention to the reconstruction of the bridge. Meanwhile, a photo of the bridge has been shared widely by social media users who are asking the Islamic Emirate to pay attention to the reconstruction of the bridge. Abdul Qahar Nadirzai, a social media activist, says this bridge is considered as the main route for most bread-winners in the area. “Dozens of small vehicles were crossing through this bridge to both sides of the river on a daily basis and the people were happy as they could easily cross over the river,” Nadrzai said, asking relevant departments to do more for the reconstruction of the respective bridge. Local officials of the public works department in Kunar say some pillars of the bridge linking Narang and Sarkano districts have been damaged due to increasing water in the river and traffic on the bridge has been suspended due to its possible collapse. “The bridge constructed by the U.S. forces during the republic is at risk of collapse due to increasing water in the river,” said Eng. Munibullah Gulabzai, design engineer of Kunar provincial public works department. He said traffic on the bridge has been suspended as the bridge was on the verge of collapse, adding that the problem has been shared with the country’s ministry of public works. According to local officials, if the bridge is suspended to all traffic and people, nearly 30,000 families using the bridge will face with lots of problems. Previously, bridges in Kunar’s Marawara, Shalton and Zeri Baba had collapsed. It is worth mentioning that bridges in Marawara and Shaton districts of Kunar have been renovated. Munir Ahmad Tanvir
