“Foreigners did not build our country, but destroyed it, and now we are rebuilding it. Afghanistan will not be built on foreign aid and charity. We will build our country with our own products,” Beradar
KABUL: Deputy Prime Minister of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan on economic affairs Mullah Abdul Ghani Beradar Akhund, formally inaugurated the long-delayed Kajaki hydropower dam in the country’s southern Helmand province, on Wednesday, his office said in a statement.
In the opening ceremony, Mullah Abdul Ghani Beradar Akhund said, “Foreigners did not build our country, but destroyed it, and now we are rebuilding it. The country will not built on foreign aid and charity. We will build our country with our own products.”
The Deputy PM for Economic Affairs called on the officials of the Islamic Emirate to address the people’s problems and show greater interest in public affairs. Because this is the nation that made many sacrifices for the rule of the Islamic system and should not be forgotten.
Construction work for the extension of the dam, was contracted with a Turkish company at the cost of 147 million U.S. dollars, according to the acting Minister of Energy and Water, Mullah Abdul Latif Mansour who told a gathering held for the inauguration ceremony.
The dam, with the capacity of one billion cubic meters of water, is expected to generate up to 100 mgw of electricity for thousands of residents as well as irrigate thousands of acres of farmlands in Helmand and the neighboring Kandahar provinces, according to the official.
A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the extension of the second phase of the dam was signed between former Afghan government’s Minister of Energy and Water and a Turkish Company in early June 2016, but the project delayed long due to growing insecurities around the project.
