Islamic countries’ role in ensuring peace in Afghanistan

A high-level meeting expected to be attended by Islamic countries’ leaders will be held in Mecca in upcoming days, during which Afghan peace process would also be discussed.
The Special Envoy to Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Avni Botsali says that the leaders of the Islamic countries in Mecca will talk about regional security, including the Afghan peace process, by the end of this month before Eid al-Fitr.
He asked the government of Afghanistan, political parties and Taliban to avail the opportunity created on Afghan peace process.
He expressed his hope that the efforts being made by the United States will lead to lasting peace in Afghanistan and end the long war in the country.
At the same time, US officials in Kabul say that US is pursuing peace process in Afghanistan, and Zalmay Khalilzad will soon publicize progress made during talks with Taliban in Qatar.
“I assure that Mr. Khalilzad has made progress in peace talks, and it will soon be clear,” US ambassador in Kabul said.
“We hope the experts and lawmakers of Afghanistan will judge the working period of the national unity government,” he added.
Expressing hope on holding the Islamic countries’ meeting on Afghan peace process, High Peace Council (HPC) says that in consider with their commitments, Islamic countries can play key role in the respect.
HPC officials stress that Islamic and regional countries should also play their role in Afghan-led and owned peace process, because, Afghans want lasting peace to be maintained in their country.
But lower house of the parliament believes that many sides are involved in Afghan peace talks which is a matter of concern.
Thus, we want such meetings to create a unified view among the Afghan politicians and regional countries so the insurgent groups get committed to step up and help ensure security throughout the country.
This comes as US special envoy for peace in Afghanistan Zalmay Khalilzad also pointed out that US supports Afghan-led peace negotiations.
Experts say that the meetings being held in different countries on Afghanistan’s issues particularly peace process, should be done in coordination with the government and people of Afghanistan.
A political expert Ali Rahmani said that OIC members should impose needed pressures on terrorism supporting countries so they honestly cooperate in this regard.
The government of Afghanistan knows that no process would succeed without its presence, thus, serious efforts should be made so the government leads direct talks with the Taliban.
