Iran releases 100 Afghan prisoners

KABUL: As many as 100 Afghan refugees who had earlier been prisoned by Iranian officials, have recently been released from jails of that country, the country’s General Directorate of Prisons and Detention Center said in a statement Monday. “As a result of the efforts of the Embassy of Afghanistan in Tehran and the Consulates of the country in that country, 100 Afghans have been released from jails of that country and handed over to the Afghan local authorities in the country’s western province of Nimroz,” the statement quoted General Director Prisons and Detention Mawlavi Mohammad Yousuf as saying. Yousuf added that the detained Afghans had been arrested by the Iranian security officials for having no legal documents and in connection with other crimes, have been released in the presence of the Deputy Ambassador of the country Mufti Mohammad Alim Norani and the Representative of the Committee for the Transfer of Afghan inmates from Iran to Afghanistan handed over to the official of the Foreign Affairs Department of Nimroz province, according to the statement. The released Afghans appreciated the efforts of the Iran-based country’s Embassy and Consulates and asked the Islamic Emirate to provide Afghans with employment opportunities inside the country, the statement added. According to the reports, as a result of the efforts of the officials of the Islamic Emirate, more than 75 Afghan inmates, which most of whom were madrasa’s students have been released from Iranian jails in the past months and returned to their home country. After the takeover of the country by the IEA thousands of Afghan prisoners who had earlier been prisoned on charge of not having legal documents have so far been released from the jails of Iran and Pakistan.
