Intl community should play effective role in economic recovery of Afghanistan

The Islamic Emirate has repeatedly asked the international community to lift all
sanctions that have been imposed on Afghanistan, particularly on the country’s banking sector

With the Islamic Emirate takeover in mid-August 2021, international sanctions have been imposed on Afghanistan’s banking sector. Although the Islamic Emirate has solved the liquidity problems in the banking sector in a very difficult situation as considerable progress has been made in this area and the situation is improving by passing each single day, continued international sanctions on the country’s banking sector will somehow affect the common Afghans. The Islamic Emirate has repeatedly asked the international community to lift all sanctions that have been imposed on Afghanistan, particularly on the country’s banking sector. Da Afghanistan Bank, the country’s central bank, has once again called on the international community to remove the sanctions, stressing that international sanctions on Afghanistan’s banking sector have negatively affected common people the most by declining their purchasing power and overall financial stability of the country. The Da Afghanistan Bank (DAB) Director Hedayatullah Badri in his most recent meeting with Rosemary DiCarlo, UN Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peace Building Affairs, has said that the international community’s continued sanctions on Afghanistan have weakened the purchasing power of the people and hindered the country’s access to international financial and banking system. He has stressed that lifting the banking sector restrictions is a human right and the demand of the Afghan people. “Although Da Afghanistan Bank has solved the liquidity problems in the banking sector in a very difficult situation, progress has been made in this area and the situation is improving day by day, but the presence of international sanctions caused international transactions to be conducted through unofficial channels against the laws, regulations and policies of the Bank of Afghanistan,” Badri stressed. He termed the removal of sanctions from Afghanistan’s banking sector as the legitimate right of all Afghans and termed the development of financial services valuable and considered the cooperation of financial institutions special banks vital, adding that the Bank of Afghanistan has created a comprehensive and legal framework for the development of microloans and financial services in the light of Islamic principles so that people can get micro-loans under easy conditions so that their businesses can grow. “Small financial aid helps in the economic growth of the society, job creation and many other areas, we hope that the international institutions will pay attention to this part and by this means the international community will play a positive role in the economic recovery of Afghanistan and the fulfillment of human rights,” Badri insisted. In the meeting, the UN side has assured UN support to Afghanistan. The United Nations should play a positive role in lifting all sanctions that have been imposed on Afghanistan since August 2021. Lifting all sanctions can help in further stability in the country. It is the legitimate right of Afghanistan and its people to have all sanctions removed as soon as possible. Mukhtar Safi
