Intl community should help construct irrigation canals in Afghanistan, Minister

KABUL: Acting Minister of Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock, Mawlavi Ataullah Omari, in a meeting with the UNFAO and WFP representatives, here in Kabul, said that Afghanistan has lots of resources and that the international community has to help construct water canals, said a statement from the ministry’s press office the other day.
“The people of Afghanistan, especially farmers, need international cooperation and support,” said the statement quoting the acting minister who met with the chairperson of the World Food Agency (WFP), Mary Elaine Sara, on Monday.
In this visit, the acting Minister of Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock, thanked both organizations for their cooperation with the people of Afghanistan under the sensitive situation, the statement further said. “We are grateful to both institutions and our colleagues for supporting our people in this bad economic situation,” Omari was quoted as saying. He also talked about various issues relating Afghanistan and added that Afghanistan has a lot of resources, so that the international community can work on the construction of irrigation canals, irrigation systems, and construction of houses, because very little work has been done in this area, so people can irrigate many lands and positive changes in life will occur. In the meeting, the representatives of the two institutions also emphasized on their sustainable activities in addition to the close cooperation of the Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock in the implementation of the program.
