Honey production records 35pc increase in Kunduz

KUNDUZ: The provincial Department of Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock has said that honey production has recorded 35 percent increase comparing to the previous years. A statement from the department said that more than 58,000 kilograms of honey has been harvested in the 1401 solar year, some 35 percent increase compared to the previous 1400 solar year. “Honey production jumped to 58,400 in 1401, 35 percent up to 1400,” said a statement quoting Mawlavi Amanullah Hassan Director of the Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock of Kunduz province. The reason behind the increase in honey production, he said the increase in the number of bee farms in the remote area of Chahardara district of the province. But, farmers complained about the import of poor-quality honey from some neighboring countries, such as Iran and Pakistan which, according to him, has affected the business of domestic honey. They asked the government, especially, the provincial agriculture, irrigation and livestock department to explore the appropriate market for their honey products abroad, besides preventing the import of low-quality honey to the country. People’s interest in beekeeping has recently increased in the northern provinces of the country, especially in Kunduz, Takhar and Badakhshan provinces. The Kabul Times
