Islam has raised the status of mothers to the highest level and serving your mother is not only an act of kindness but is also rewarded in Jannah. A mother goes through infinite struggles to give birth to a child. She not only nurses her child in her womb for nine months but takes the responsibility of the child’s upbringing on her shoulders. It is true when it is said that an expecting woman’s body can dissolve her bones to feed the fetus in her womb.
Young Muslim women who are afraid of Nikah and motherhood are missing one of the most enriching journeys of their whole lives. Being a ‘mother’ surely brings responsibility to her but it also elevates her status in the eyes of Almighty Allah. It is because of the struggles and challenges our mothers face, the Almighty Allah commands us to repay them with love, kindness, respect, loyalty, warmth, and much more in return of their dedication and selflessness. The command to be good to one’s parents begins right from the Quran.
A Mother develops a great sense of attachment and love towards her children in her period of bearing.
This period of bearing and weaning makes the mother develop a soft heart towards her every child. Everything she does throughout this period is considered as ‘Ibadah’. The pain and struggles during delivery time cannot be underestimated.
Even though a father is the provider of the family, our beloved Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) stated that the status of a mother is three times above that of a father.
As mentioned by our beloved prophet (PBUH), we should treat our mothers in the most polite and respectful manner.
I came to the Prophet (PBUH) and said, “O Messenger of Allah, I want to perform Jihad in the way of Allah. He asked, “Is your mother alive?” I replied, “Yes.” The Prophet then said: “Cling to her feet, because paradise is there.”
Clinging to your mother’s feet does not imply lying at her feet all of the time, but rather recognizing where it is so you may act accordingly.
Honor your mothers by serving them as they like. Serving your mother means not just providing financial security for her, but also obeying her, treating her with respect and humility, praying for her well-being in this world and in the next, speaking politely with her, and keeping her happy, among other things.
These Hadiths examples place special privileges on mothers in Islam which should not be forgotten. While loving our mothers, let us not forget to give equal respect and love to our fathers as well. They also deserve our attention and care. In today’s fleeting times, our fathers and mothers are the most trustworthy companions we can ever have.
