Hanafi urges aid agencies to cooperate in implementation of development projects in country

KABUL: The Deputy Prime Minister for Administrative Affairs Mawlavi Abdul Salam Hanafi said that the international community and aid agencies should cooperate with Afghanistan in the implementation of development projects, according to a statement from Arg the other day. Mawlavi Hanafi made the remarks in a meeting with Jorge Moreira da Silva, the Executive Director of the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS), and his accompanying delegation, the statement said. Moreira da Silva appreciated the cooperation of the Islamic Emirate in the implementation of the UNOPS’s development projects in Afghanistan and stated that the organization as the largest institution of the United Nations, is operating in the fields of social assistance, infrastructure, and irrigation of agricultural lands in Afghanistan, according to the statement. “A total of 1.3 million people have been provided with social assistance in 90 districts of 30 provinces, as well as the organization has assisted and provided shelters and essential aid to the earthquake-affected families in Herat province,” the statement quoted Moreira da Silva as saying The UNOPS Executive Director said that the organization is going to start a new project in the field of irrigation of agricultural lands through the installation of solar pumps and requires the cooperation of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan. Meanwhile, Mawlavi Hanafi expressed pleasure over the organization’s activities and the United Nations’ as sistance to the people of Afghanistan and clarified the IEA supported the activities of UNOPS in Afghanistan and will provide all the necessary facilities for the implementation of its projects in the country. “While, a tangible development has been made in the fields of ensuring overall security, prohibition, cultivation and smuggling of narcotics, elimination of administrative corruption and economic progress in Afghanistan, it is necessary that the international community and aid agencies to cooperate in alternative cultivation of drugs for farmers and the implementation of development projects to create job opportunities for the people,” the statement quoted Hanafi as saying.
