Govt. considers German military presence key in counter terrorism

German cabinet has extended the country’s military mission in Afghanistan for another year. The government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan has welcomed the decision made recently by the parliament of Germany in connection with extension of German’s military mission in Afghanistan.
Chief executive office by welcoming the move taken by German government regarding extension of the country’s military presence in Afghanistan considered role of German forces as significant in training of Afghan security forces and counterterrorism.
“Those NATO member countries that have military presence in Afghanistan are cooperating with Afghanistan in training and equipping the Afghan National Defense and Security Forces (ANDSF); therefore, their support and continued cooperation are significant,” a spokesperson to chief executive Faraidoon Khwazoon said, adding that Afghanistan and the region are still facing with increasing threats posed by terrorist groups.
He further said presence of foreign forces was needed for further equipping and strengthening of ANDSF as Afghan security forces have taken full responsibility of the country’s security for the past few years.
Meanwhile, a number of Afghan military experts consider extension of German’s military presence in Afghanistan as effective for training and supporting Afghan National Defense and Security Forces (ANDSF).
“Undoubtedly German forces have provided continued cooperation to Afghanistan in the field of security, development and training of Afghan National Police; therefore, their presence is a need for Afghanistan,” an Afghan military expert Javed Kohistani said.
He added that NATO member countries could further help ANDSF in training and military planning.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s Cabinet has decided to extend the military mission in Afghanistan for another year, Deutsche Welle reported, adding that a leaked document showed government expressing doubts about the prospects of peace in Afghanistan.
According to the report, this comes a day after an internal strategy paper showed Germany had offered to host another peace conference, this time with an extra invitation for the Taliban.
Germany’s Bundeswehr currently has around 1,200 soldiers stationed in Afghanistan, part of NATO’s Resolute Support mission.
Report in connection with extension of German military presence in Afghanistan comes at a time that peace talks between US officials and representatives of the Taliban group have entered significant progress.
On the other hand, German defense minister in a meeting with President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani held in sideline of Munich Security Conference praised honestly efforts of ANDSF in counter terrorism, saying that Germany was witness of Afghan security forces’ capabilities and effective work showing the country’s strong military and political leadership.
In the meeting, President Ghani said that improvement of security situation in Afghanistan would result in implementation of big economic programs in the country, considering role of European countries in particular Germany as significant in Afghanistan peace process.
