Fire and essential preventative measures you need to know

Fire or blaze in a home is one of the oldest disasters that can endanger people’s property and health in a short time. Fire is the burning of combustible materials or unwanted fire that starts uncontrollably from a heat source at the moment of occurrence and spreads and develops with its heat force. We always ask ourselves what should be done before a fire or blaze occurs and what preventive measures can be taken before and during a fire. Fire is one of those incidents that can happen at any moment to anyone and anywhere. You have undoubtedly heard that accidents don’t happen themselves, but we must not forget that most accidents are preventable. In case of a fire, remember to stay low, cover your nose and mouth with a wet cloth, and use the nearest exit to evacuate the building. This article addresses the factors of fire and actions to be taken before and during a fire in residential homes. Key Fire Factors Firstly, it is necessary to know that every fire requires three elements to start: oxygen, heat, and combustible materials. Since all three elements are always present in residential homes, we remind you of the critical fire factors:

  • Home fires during cooking: One of the most significant causes of home fires is cooking, including gas stoves, grills, and other potential fire hazards.
  • Home fires through heating appliances: Heating appliances such as gas heaters, electric heaters, wood or coal stoves, and oil heaters are another cause of home fires, especially in winter

. • Fires through electronic devices and electrical appliances: Electronic devices are among the common causes of fires in homes. Electronic systems and worn-out cables or electrical lines can spark and cause fires.

  • Human carelessness: One of the most common causes of starting a fire is human carelessness. Improper use of combustible materials such as cigarettes, lighter fluid, electrical connections, and malfunctioning electrical appliances can lead to fire ignition.
  • Child’s play: Children, through childish games and unintentional mistakes like lighting fires using matches or cigarette lighters, can be one of the most significant factors in causing fires. Fire Prevention

The simplest and most effective method for people to prevent and ensure fire safety is fire prevention. If prevention is successful, there will be no need for other safety measures. To prevent fires, we must pay serious attention to its elements: heat, combustible materials, and oxygen. Among these, removing oxygen from homes and buildings is almost impossible, so prevention should focus on the other two factors. Many residential fires result from carelessness or building deterioration, both of which can be prevented with some thought and investment. Some important points to consider in fire prevention at home and workplace: To comply with safety regulations and have firefighting equipment, make sure to have firefighting devices at home and be familiar with how to use them effectively in case of an emergency. – Be careful not to let machinery, devices, and equipment become excessively hot. – Keep away from your towels and cloths soaked in oil that are used for cleaning tools. – Keep any kind of pollution, such as oil, grease, or flammable materials, away from your home. – Store flammable and combustible materials in a suitable and safe place. – In case of a fire outbreak, inform firefighting units immediately before taking any other action. – If you plan to travel, make sure to turn off your gas. – Keeping flammable materials away from igniting sources and heating appliances is a fundamental rule that must be observed in residential areas. – Use various types of fire extinguishers at home and teach their usage to all family members. – Practice the fire escape route with your family in advance and train them on how to escape. – Never store flammable liquids such as oil, grease, or gasoline indoors. Store these liquids in suitable containers and a safe place. – Extinguish cigarette filters before discarding them. It’s better not to smoke at all. – Installing smoke-sensitive alarm systems is one of the effective measures to prevent fires at home. What to Do During a Fire? When facing a fire, the most crucial action is to prevent its spread and extinguish it. Fire spreads rapidly, so the first step is to contact the fire department and firefighting units and try to provide a concise description of the incident. Know the construction type of the building and collaborate with neighbors and emergency services. It’s necessary to understand that metal structures are highly susceptible to fire. Even a small fire near the columns can weaken the steel immediately, compromising a significant portion of its strength. Therefore, during a fire, pay attention to the following essential points:

  • Try to evacuate all individuals from the building.
  • Never enter a burning building under any circumstances.
  • Do not move a burning container
  • Smother the flames with sand, salt, a non-flammable blanket, or other coverings.
  • If smoke, heat, or flames block your exit routes, close the door and stay in the room. • Preferably, choose a room or area with a window to distance yourself from the fire.
  • Signal for help through the window using a brightly colored cloth if possible.
  • Call the fire department and inform them of your location.
  • Try to inform your neighbors and friends about the incident so they can assist you by contacting emergency services and aiding in your rescue.
  • During a fire, protect yourself from gas or toxic smoke by covering your mouth and nose with a damp cloth. • Never use water to extinguish oil fires under any circumstances.
  • If your clothing catches fire, stop, drop to the ground, and roll to extinguish the flames. It is worth noting that if a fire is not contained in time, it can cause extensive damage to the home. In some cases, fires may be accompanied by other natural disasters, such as earthquakes or occur immediately after them. In many instances, secondary fire damage can exceed the damage caused by the initial fire incident. Assistance and AdviceDuring a fire, if assistance is needed or there is any severe injury, immediately contact local authorities such as firefighting departments or the General Directorate of Natural Disasters and Firefighting, rescue teams, local organizations, or emergency service providers who may assist in the area.
