Enhancing Khawaf-Herat Railway technical cooperation discussed

KABUL: The General Director of the Afghanistan Railway Authority Mullah Bakht-urRahman Sharafat met with the Iranian special representative to Afghanistan Hassan Kazemi Qomi, here in Kabul, the Kabul-based Iranian Embassy said in a statement on Monday. “The meeting discussed issues related to the railway including the operation of the Khawaf-Herat railway, completion of the route, and enhancing educational, technical and equipment cooperation between the two sides,” the statement said, adding that the Khawaf-Herat railway, a railway that links the two sanctioned countries to the global markets via China. Officials of the Islamic Emirate are optimistic to utilize the Khawaf-Herat railway as they have already dispatched a group of employees to retain the required training in Tehran, the statement added. The Khawaf-Herat railway project has been part of a proposed $2 billion Five Nations Railway Corridor (FNRC), which would run through Iran, Afghanistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, and China. The total length is 2,000 km and the railway route runs from Herat to the Afghan-Tajik border and, after crossing Tajikistan, passes through Kyrgyzstan, where it will reach China’s Xinjiang region via the China-Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan (CKU) railway.
