Deputy Ministry of Interior for counter narcotics has informed that the ministry has decided to construct a huge drug treatment center for more than 20,000 drug-addicts in Kabul’s Pul-e-Charkhi area.
Meanwhile, in its recent report the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) in Afghanistan has stated that it has signed an agreement with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) to provide essential medicines and medical supplies for drug treatment.
“Through the 2 M USD partnership, UNDP and UNODC will jointly support the provision of essential medicine, equipment, and hygiene kits to 17 drug treatment centers across the country with a 930-bed capacity across the north, west, east, and central highland regions,” the report reads.
The counter-narcotics department of the interior ministry welcomed the help of the United Nations Development Program. A large facility will be built in Kabul to treat drug addicts, according to the interior ministry’s counter-narcotics department, and construction is already under way.
A large number of people particularly youth have used drugs for years as they have become addicted to drugs due to unemployment, poverty and dozens of other problems. Most of the drug-addicts spend their days and nights away from their families in cold places or warm places. To find drugs to use, they mostly turn to begging, or other immoral activities.
As security has improved across Afghanistan and the country is slowly moving towards permanent peace and stability. The Islamic Emirate leadership is working to somehow eliminate the cultivation of poppy and fight narcotics in the country. The IEA has introduced saffron and soybean as alternative for cultivating poppy in various parts of the country particularly the southern zone. It should be said that banning poppy cultivation in the country has made drug-traffickers to somehow encourage people not to cultivate poppy and tell them to cultivate saffron and soyabean, so that they can use it to make money and make a lot of profits.
