Cross-stuffing of Afghan cargo in Karachi hailed, media

KABUL: The Pak-Afghan Joint Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PAJCCI) has hailed permission for the cross-stuffing of Afghanistan-bound cargo at the Karachi port, a local media quoted a statement from the chamber as saying. PAJCC head Zia-ul-Haq Sarhadi called the Customs Department’s permission a welcome step towards meeting a longstanding demand of businessmen, Pajhwok Afghan News quoted. The Directorate General of Transit Trade recently issued a notification allowing the crossstuffing of Afghan and Uzbek cargo, according to the media outlet. In a statement, Sarhadi said businesspeople had to pay extra charg es due to delays in the return of containers to the shipping company because of cross-stuffing restrictions. Previously, goods containers took several days to reach Afghanistan and return to the Karachi port, resulting in fines for importers. As a result of the cross-stuffing permission, containers will be offloaded in Karachi and goods transferred to trucks for transportation to Afghanistan. Sarhadi demanded the crossstuffing facility should also be permitted at the Aza Khel Dry Port, which was constructed some years back in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Noshera district, the media concluded.
