A cotton-processing factory worth $2 million has started operation in Mazar-e-Sharif, the provincial capital of Balkh.
According to officials of provincial chamber of commerce and industries for Balkh, the Siam Hashimi Cotton Processing Plant has been built on 3 acres of land in Mazar-e-Sharif city.
Syed Mohammad Hashim Hashimi, a senior official of the plant, has told The Kabul Times correspondent that the plant has the capacity to process 70,000 kg of cotton in 24 hours, adding that the factory has provided employment opportunities for more than 100 people.
Local officials in Balkh province have said that security has been strengthened and they are trying to provide entrepreneurs with an ideal investment environment.
Meanwhile, officials for Balkh Chamber of Commerce and Industry have said that the factory will lead Afghanistan to self-sufficiency in cotton ginning.
They asked the Islamic Enurate if Afghanistan to provide further facilities to those investing in the country.
