Construction work on 18 schools kicked off in Paktia

GARDEZ: Construction work on 18 schools worth 225 million Afghani (some 3.2 million U.S. dollars) in an official ceremony, has been started in the country’s eastern province of Paktia, the provincial Education Department said in a statement the other day. The ceremony was participated by a number of provincial officials, Mujahidin and scholars, the statement said. Addressing the ceremony, the head of the provincial education department Abdul Qayum Farooqi said 60 percent of schools in the province had no buildings and their students were facing problems, according to the statement. “Buildings for 18 schools would be constructed by Japan in partnership with UNICEF in 13 districts of the province and each building will have six classrooms, an administrative room, toilets, and other necessary facilities,” the statement quoted Farooqi as saying. Currently, there are 370 public schools in the province and 183 of them don’t have buildings and some other school buildings need serious renovation. The Kabul Times
