A religious scholar, Mawlawi Samiullah Raihan, was martyred and 16 other people were wounded in an explosion happened inside a mosque in Kabul’s PD9 on Friday. The explosion happened at around 1:20pm Kabul time during Friday prayers at Taqwa Mosque in Paktia Kot area in Kabul.
President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani in a statement denounced the attack and called on relevant departments to probe the incident.
Meanwhile, the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) in a statement on Saturday said the organization remains concerned about the continuing heavy toll on civilians from the conflict taking place during the holy month of Ramadan and urges parties to do more to prevent harm.
The Mission said was looking into the 24 May attack at a Kabul mosque during Friday prayers. Initial reports indicated civilians were among those martyred, with dozens injured when an improvised explosive device detonated near the Imam in the mosque.
Meanwhile according to UNAMA statement, the mission was also looking into the 22 May incident in Ghazni, involving a Humvee vehicle full of explosives which resulted to 17 civilian casualties and among them two girls were also martyred.
Afghanistan’s peace process appears to reach a stalemate with the Taliban’s mala fide intention for talks. Declaration of the Taliban’s spring offensive showed their lukewarm response to the ceasefire, which is a serious demand in the negotiation.
The Taliban have turned a blind eye to the public demands during the Consultative Loya Jirga and continued their insurgency without signaling for ceasefire. The Taliban have constantly spilt the blood of civilians, violated the rights of people, trampled upon Afghan Constitution and international norms, and played a highly destructive role within more than two decades. The Taliban are not a political party but a terrorist group, which respects neither national nor international laws.
However, the attack on Kabul mosque is yet to be confirmed by the militant group, but Afghans do usually consider Taliban as the main reason behind continued militancy and attack on sacred places and public gatherings.
If Taliban do reject attacks on sacred places, schools and public places and calling themselves Afghan and Muslim, they should reconsider the voice of their people and the Islamic fatwa and rethink about country’s interests and oneness. Otherwise these conflicts will produce no winner except farther destruction of the county. The conflict has already taken a lot of lives, regardless of whether it is a soldier, a civilian or even the Taliban fighters who are from Afghanistan.
Afghans’ war against terrorism is taking sacrifices more than before, specifically when it comes to civilian casualties. Reports on civilian killing are disappointing and alarming. Afghans go about their daily activities but with great fear as terrorist spare nobody even the small children and women.
Continued terror attacks by Taliban and other terror groups in the most sacred month in Islam, have once again proved the fact that Islam and human life have no value before these barbarians. The Afghan government and its international partners need much to do and eradicate terrorism.
