Chromite mine extraction begins in Khost

KABUL: Chromite mine extraction project has been started in Zazai district of the country’s eastern province of Khost, a statement from the provincial Mines and Petroleum Department said Mon- day. “Based on the estimation, about 11,000 tons of Chromite worth 118,6 billion Afghani (some 1.37 billion U.S. dollars) will be extracted and more than 200 people will be provided with job opportunities in the mining project,” said the statement. After the Islamic Emirate resumed power, illegal extraction of mines and smuggling of precious stones has been prevented countrywide, the statement quoted the Deputy Governor of Khost Mohammad Anwar Din Perwar as saying. Efforts are underway to discover some other mines in the province and after the successful completion of their primary studies extraction work will be started, said the statement. Chromite is a mineral that is used in heat-resistant clothing, sprays, steel pipes, nonflammable products, diabetes control insulin, space satellites, missiles, weapons and some other tools.
