Cholera kills 12, infects thousands in Jawzjan province

SHIBERGHAN: At least twelve people have lost their lives and 18,000 other infected with cholera after the disease’s outbreak in two months in northern Jawzjan province, a local health official said Sunday.
“A total of 18,000 patients affected with the disease, due to extreme heat, people failure to observe healthcare and using polluted water in Mardian, Mangajic, Aqcha, Faizabad and Khanaqa districts of the province,” Dr. Abdul Ghani Samim acting director of the provincial public health told media.
According to Samim, the Afghan Families Solidarity Office, with the financial cooperation of the UNICEF has created five response teams to address the emergency cholera and acute diarrhea cases in the province.
“The people need to be protected against the illness however the cholera cases are under control in the districts of the province,” the official added.
As many as 4,000 people have also been infected with cholera in Jawzjan province, in few days in the province.
