Following the official start of US and NATO troops withdrawal from Afghanistan, Pentagon declared that US wants to keep on training Afghan National Defense and Security Forces in a third country.
A top U.S. military officer says the U.S. military may continue to train Afghan security forces, but do it in other countries after American forces leave Afghanistan.
Joint Chiefs Chairman Mark Milley told reporters at the Pentagon it is “possible” that training could be held in different countries as the drawdown continues but military planners “haven’t figured that out 100% yet.”
“There’s a lot of different options out there, and we haven’t settled on one of them yet,” said Milley. “When we get some finalized plans put together we’ll bring those to the secretary for approval.”
He further said that more than 300,000 Afghan security forces have been leading and planning military operations for years and US would undoubtedly support them to fight terrorists.
Meanwhile, Afghanistan Ministry of Defense by welcoming the US possible decision for training Afghan forces in other countries says undoubtedly the government and defense ministry of Afghanistan welcome the plan.
“Continued financial support and training of Afghan defense and security forces by the international community particularly US to support the Afghan security forces have been effective enough,” said Fawad Aman, a spokesperson to Afghanistan ministry of defense.
This comes after foreign special representatives for European Union (EU), NATO, Germany, France, Italy, Norway and US in their joint statement have informed of agreement in connection with continued international support to Afghan National Defense and Security Forces (ANDSF), saying that their support from ANDSF will make the forces to address foreign and domestic threats.
Meanwhile, a number of Afghan political experts consider US and NATO continued support and cooperation with Afghanistan security forces as effective.
“Undoubtedly US and NATO have provided financial and technical support to Afghan forces in the past 20 years and their continued support to ANDSF is a need,” said Javed Kohistani, an Afghan expert.
He said that NATO member countries could share their experiences with ANDSF and provide training to the Afghan forces in other countries.
Previously, NATO Secretary General had praised the Afghan National Defense and Security Forces for honestly fighting terrorism, saying that they witnessed increasing capabilities and abilities of ANDSF showing the strong political and military leadership of the country.
The NATO Secretary General had assured of the organization’s continued and long-term support to ANDSF.
This comes amid of increasing insecurities and violence by Taliban in the country. Most of provinces of the country as Helmand, Kandahar, Zabul, Ghazni, Logar, Baghlan and Laghman have witnessed recent large-scale attacks by Taliban fighters. Their attacks have been repulsed by Afghan security forces and Taliban fighters have been inflicted heavy casualties.
