Afghanistan makes historic win against Bangladesh, entering ICC T20 World Cup semifinals first ever

KABUL: The Afghanistan National Cricket Team in an interesting match, defeated Bangladesh by 8 runs in their last Super Eight clash at the Arnos Vale Ground in Kingstown, St Vincent, and entered the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 semifinals for the first time, the Cricket Board said in a statement the other day. Riding on their captain Rashid Khan’s fantastic cameo, Afghanistan have managed to post 115/5 at the end of their 20 overs against Bangladesh in their last Super Eight match, the statement said. The opening pair of Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran fell to leg-spinner Rishad Hossain, who took three for 26, the statement further said, adding that Bangladesh had to chase down the target in 12.1 overs to turn the net run rate in their favor, but Naveen-ul- Haq dismissed captain Najmul Hossain Shanto and veteran Shakib al Hasan on successive balls. Skipper Rashid Khan captured four scalps to keep Afghanistan in the match before right-arm Naveen took Bangladesh’s final two wickets. Eventually, it was Afghanistan who emerged triumphant with skipper Khan and Haq taking four wickets each to secure a magnificent win by just eight runs. At the post-match press conference, Rashid Khan described the victory as a significant achievement for Afghanistan, mentioning that the strong start by Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran in the first innings, and Fazalhaq Farooqi in the second innings, paved the way for Afghanistan’s win in the ongoing ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024. Also, the country’s cricket team is scheduled to play their last match of the ongoing World Cup against South Africa. The Kabul Times
