KABUL: The acting minister of Information and Culture, Mohammad Taher Zuhair, said in a press conference yesterday that Herat province was the birthplace of miniature arts and calligraphy in Afghanistan.
At the press conference, which was also attended by the UNESCO Representative for Afghanistan and the Head of the Cultural Departments of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Acting Minister of Information and Culture said that Turkey and Iran have stepped up efforts to register miniature arts and calligraphy in the names of their countries, which according to him was a matter of serious concern for Afghanistan.
“We call on these two countries to refocus on this matter and to respect the origin and authenticity of these two arts, which is Afghanistan,” the minister said. He pointed out that Kamaluddin Behzad was the founder of miniature and painting during the Timurid period.
The acting minister of Information and Culture said that if ownership of the two arts is to be claimed, the main owner is Afghanistan, and all historical texts and sources state that Kamaluddin Behzad was the founder of miniature.
Mohammad Taher Zuhair went on asking Turkey and Iran to accept Afghanistan’s ownership of the two arts and help the country in registering of them.
The acting minister also gave information about the ministry’s functions in terms of the country’s cultural heritage and said that two tangible cultural heritages have been registered by UNESCO, one is the Ghor Minaret and the other is the Bamyan Valley.
He added that two tangible cultural heritages of the country, Bagh-e-Babur and Herat Grand Mosque are under process to be registered as the World Heritage sites.
